Puerto Rico infrastructure 'shattered' after Hurricane Maria

On a good day Toa Baha is about 25 minutes drive from the Puerto Rican capital San Juan. But these are certainly not good days.

In fact they are the worst this US territory has experienced for many a year.
The infrastructure lies shattered by the might of a monster storm that cut a swathe through this island.
It took us approaching 90 minutes to get there, circumnavigating road blocks, fallen trees, downed power lines and floods.
When we got there it was a pitiful sight.

Many homes wrecked by the 145mph winds and a combination of ceaseless rain and a storm surge.
One part of Toa Baha was under 10ft of water on Thursday, sending families scurrying to top floors or roofs. And there they had to stay through hell and high water for more than 24 hours.

Today, the storm having passed through, the rescues began and we found people who had lived through a frightening ordeal.

If homes weren't flooded they were battered by the hurricane, many now inhabitable.
The problem for Puerto Rico is that Toa Baha is just one community among thousands devastated by Hurricane Maria.
